Founded in 1945 with assistance from former American carrier Trans World Airlines (TWA), Boeing aircraft make up the majority of the Ethiopian fleet.

Garuda Indonesia clarified it took off the table the KSh 600 billion (US$ 6 billion) deal after its passengers started losing trust in the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.

Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's largest carrier and has had a long association with American aviation.

Boeing is expected this week to unveil a patch to the MCAS system, with the aim of getting the model back in the air.

The national carrier hatched the plan of buying the planes in 2018 at a cost of Ksh120 billion.

Southwest Airlines said Monday that it's handling an average of 130 cancellations a day, out of more than 4,000 flights throughout its system.

Some airline pilots flew 737 simulators with the updated system software in Renton on Saturday.

Boeing Co. (BA.N) has asked airline owners of its 737 Max jet to submit orders for a free update of anti-stall software being readied for deployment, in a sign that regulators are closer to approving a proposed fix that could get the planes flying again.

The boss of Ethiopian Airlines said he still "believes in Boeing" in spite of a crash involving the United States firm's 737 Max plane which killed 157 people.

Boeing called Saturday's meeting a "productive session", with pilots successfully counteracting the MCAS system in simulated tests, and landing the planes unscathed.

The MAX is an upgrade to Boeing's best-selling 737 narrowbody jet and only entered service in 2017. But Tewolde said the airline's relationship with Boeing was sound. The company is swapping other types of planes for canceled MAX flights.

The reassurance session on Wednesday is part of Boeing's plan to reach all current and many future 737 MAX operators and their home regulators to discuss software and training updates to the jet, Boeing said in a statement.

But even as KQ set in motion plan to buy the now grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, its counterpart in Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, which had also entered into a similar contract with Boeing went on the opposition direction.

Once the software is approved by the FAA, it will be mandated, the agency has said.

Separately, Boeing is rolling out new pilot training courses to cover the new flight control systems.

To return to business as usual, Boeing will have to satisfy not only the FAA but also global regulators, skeptical airlines in the USA and elsewhere, and the flying public.
