The first look at Smith's blue Genie in the live-action film made many fans of the Disney classic confused.
The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, hits theaters May 24, 2019.
It looks like Will Smith is hosting SNL and they made a digital short mocking the trend of Disney live-action remakes. In terms of milking that nostalgia, this trailer certainly did a solid job, even if the movie's still looking pretty rough in places. But what do you make of the full trailer? When it released on home video, I watched it every day for a month. His "hip-hop" Genie seems pretty comfortable in his own skin, and it's hard not to be reminded of the effortless (if slightly dorky) cool Smith possessed on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Alongside Smith and Massoud, Naomi Scott will play the role of Princess Jasmine. One track is said to be a "beautiful" solo song for Jasmine, while another is a "sweet" duet between Jasmine and Aladdin. In addition, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won an Oscar for "City of Stars" from La La Land, will team up with Menken to write a few new, original songs. As opposed to the teaser, Will Smith appears to not don the blue shade at all times in the trailer. As the original Genie, Robin Williams was a mile-a-minute reference machine, burning through celebrity impressions at an alarming rate.
"But I found a lane that pays homage". I am a millennial on the internet, I got jokes, people.
Speaking about the fun he had filming, he continued: "It's one of the greatest filmmaking experiences that I have ever had. It's so spectacular, it's such a lovely movie and I can't wait for people to see it".
