Then, when Elon Musk said he expects the Model Y to outsell the S, X and 3 combined, it had many of us returning to a thought we've had before. Tesla struggled to churn out Model 3 vehicles as quickly as Musk promised investors, especially in the two quarters following the Model 3's production-line announcement. Instead, it's about having the styling cues of an SUV, but being based on a passenger auto platform underneath.
Let's have a quick look at what Tesla has offered in its much-awaited Model Y. With its extra get-up-and-go the Performance model will offer "only" 280 miles of range.
Tesla opened preorders with a $2,500 deposit for the Model Y Long Range on its website Thursday night, but the automaker hasn't said how many it has received. "Will some potential M3 buyers wait?" It will cost 39,000 dollars and will be available in spring 2021. The e-tron, which has a 400-plus-km (248 mile) range, is now being rolled out in Europe and will go on sale in the U.S.in the second quarter.
What's new. The world got its first look at the Model Y late Thursday night.
The lowest-end Model Y, the $39,000 Standard Range, will have a range of 230 miles, a top speed of 120 miles per hour, and zero-to-60 acceleration of 5.9 seconds. With the capability of accelerating from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds, the price of this version is $47,000.

The model comes in four versions: Standard Range, Long Range, Performance, and Dual Motor AWD. However, it will snap to 60 in just 4.8 seconds and carry on all the way to 135mph. The 0-60 time is on par with supercars at 3.5 seconds and the top speed raises to 150mph. Apart from the performance, this version will be equipped with the 20-inch performance wheels and performance brakes to offer the ultimate sports driving experience. It's taller, and it has more cargo space, and even the option of seven seats instead of the usual five, but is it an "SUV"? The new SUV also has a 0.23 drag coefficient that should make it quiet and efficient on the highway relative to other models in the class.
Its most important vehicle, the upcoming Model Y, is already beginning to feel like more than just the SUV equivalent of the Model 3. The rest of the cabin layout is similar to what Tesla is skilful in bringing for its customers. Fulfilling another target, Tesla finally unveiled the Model Y at the Tesla Design Studio in California. Elon Musk has claimed all Teslas may be able to fully drive themselves by the end of this year, and do so while you nap by the end of 2020.
As far as Tesla's fundamental ability to produce the vehicle, it seems like that could have been possible.
The $35,000 Model 3 was an important Tesla corporate goal from the beginning of the company, Musk said February 28. The point of a vehicle like this is to build it on the same line as its sister model, reduce tooling investments and supply chain variation to a minimum and get it to market rapidly so it can start boosting profit margins.
Press information noted that the Y "is also compatible with our current Supercharger network of more than 12,000 Superchargers in 36 countries, as well as our new V3 Superchargers which can charge at rates up to 1,000 miles per hour". With 75% parts shared in common with the Model 3, the Model Y should be much easier to make efficiently and affordably than its more adventurous predecessors.
