WHO: Assaults might reverse positive aspects in Congo’s Ebola struggle

This is the DRC's 10th and largest Ebola outbreak, and the second biggest in history.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters shortly afterward the Fore-Lowcock presentation that the World Health Organization has now tallied more than 1,000 cases in northern DRC since the outbreak was declared in August 2018.

They have been telling people "this disease is incurable".

Though more than 96,000 people have been vaccinated in the country, and more than 44 million border screenings have helped to slow the spread of Ebola, the risk of national and regional spread remains very high, especially when episodes of violence and instability impact the response, the World Health Organization warned in a statement.

V920 (rVSV-ZEBOV) is a recombinant, replication-competent vesicular stomatitis virus-based candidate vaccine.

Most cases have been recorded in the towns of Katwa and Beni in North Kivu province.

Additionally, travelers leaving the Ebola outbreak area may be subject to travel restrictions or monitoring by ministries of health in other countries and should check in advance for any requirements.

Some people are refusing medical care and turning to preachers and prayers to chase away Ebola.

"Furthermore, as the Ebola response increasingly requires more time and funds, it is sapping the already stretched resources needed to provide lifesaving aid to more than 13 million people following decades of war and conflict in DRC". Just last month, militants attacked an Ebola treatment center, killing a police officer while in February, two treatment centers were attacked forcing some humanitarian efforts to be put on hold.
