Almost 400 B737 Max aircraft have been delivered to carriers worldwide, with Southwest now the largest operator with 31 aircraft in its fleet.
Boeing is developing new software for the jet's anti-stall system, which has come under scrutiny since the crashes.
Initially, the Trump administration stood by Boeing's Max 8 and Max 9 following the crash, even after several global airlines and countries immediately grounded the fleet pending an investigation.
Despite being Boeing's best-selling plane ever, the 737 Max's reputation has collapsed in recent months after two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia killed a total of 346 people.
For now Boeing is concentrating on submitting a software update and finalizing pilot training for regulatory approval.
Currently, Boeing has pilots from American Airlines testing a software update to the MCAS system in the simulator at the Boeing facility in Renton, Washington. The agency and Boeing are now working to restore confidence in the 737 Max's safety with the public and regulators around the world, which halted flights before the U.S. They will discuss the progress of the FAA's review on the 737 MAX. Some US airlines have extended flight cancellations into mid-August, with an expectation that the plane will be recertified to fly before that deadline. "But by extending our cancellations through the summer, we can plan more reliably for the peak travel season".
The airline said it will bring the Max aircraft back on line as spares to supplement its operations once it is receritfied. Southwest have had to cancel around 90 flights per day and reported in their financial filings a loss of $150 million in revenue.
Earlier Monday, first daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump paid tribute to the victims of the Ethiopian Air crash during a visit to Addis Ababa. 2,800 of those canceled flights have been caused from the 737 MAX being out of service. Let us know in the comments!
