Referring to the test, a White House official said: "We are aware of the report and have no further comment".

A senior foreign ministry official said that further talks would be "lousy" if Mr Pompeo was involved, asking that he be replaced by someone "more careful".

In an address to the Supreme People's Assembly, the North's version of parliament, Kim gave the US until the end of the year to come up with a more mutually acceptable negotiation strategy.

Confirmation of the visit follows speculation that Kim would soon reach out to a long-time ally after failing to get sanctions relief during his last nuclear talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in February.

Instead, the North has carried out smaller provocations.

The initial United States intelligence assessment is North Korea tested components for an anti-tank weapon, rather than a fully operational new weapon, the official told CNN on Thursday. Another possible clue: one of the lower level officials mentioned in the North's report on the test - Pak Jong Chon - is known as an artillery official.

Responding to Pyongyang's remarks, a spokesperson for the US State Department said on Thursday that Washington remained "ready to engage" with North Korea in a "constructive" manner.

Kim came to power in 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, who had visited Russian Federation for a summit with then President Dmitry Medvedev earlier that year. Kim has only offered limited steps toward denuclearization.

The visit comes after Kim gave a lengthy speech in which he said he would give the U.S.to the end of this year to come up with new proposals for future talks.

A Pyongyang official was meanwhile seen inspecting a train station in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok, near Russia's border with North Korea, Russian state media reported.

"This looks like a new form of cruise missile", he said.

It was not immediately clear what type of weapon the North Koreans fired, but experts said the description of a tactical weapon, with guided flight, capable of carrying a powerful warhead and fired at a variety of targets, suggested a short-range missile rather a longer-range ballistic missile, meaning the move would not violate North Korea's self-declared moratorium on testing.

"I am convinced we will have a real opportunity to achieve that outcome", Pompeo said at a joint news conference after talks with Japan's foreign and defence ministers. "We will continue to enforce all sanctions on North Korea and encourage every country to do so".
