The Detroit Red Wings will introduce Steve Yzerman as their new general manager this afternoon, a source confirmed to MLive.

"We believe Steve Yzerman is the ideal choice", said Chris Ilitch, the president and chief executive of Ilitch Holdings, which holds for the Red Wings. He and Holland are very close.

Holland has been the Red Wings general manager since 1997.

The worst kept secret in hockey.Steve Yzerman is the new GM of the Red Wings. He served as captain since he was 21, led the team to three Stanley Cup championships and finished his career as the seventh-all time leading scorer in National Hockey League history.

Yzerman's potential return to Detroit was not a particularly well kept secret, with rumours starting to pick up following his departure from his position at GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning just two weeks before training camps opened for the 2018-19 season. "He's been an wonderful general manager for our organization". Steve Yzerman has re-joined the Detroit Red Wings.

Under Yzerman, the Lightning reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2015.

The conference will be held at Little Caesars Arena at 3:00 p.m.

In 22 seasons with the Red Wings, he scored 692 goals and amassed 1,755 points. He served as a consultant to the Lightning until their season ended this week with a first-round sweep against Columbus. He began his post-playing career as vice-president of hockey operations under Holland in Detroit and was part of the organization as a Stanley Cup victor in 2008 before leaving to lead the Lightning.

Detroit has spent the past three seasons in mediocrity, and hope Yzerman can set the team straight.

Yzerman's return will be heralded in Detroit, and now he'll face more pressure as a front office member than he ever has.

Yzerman and his family make their home in suburban Detroit, and even as Lightning GM he would commute back and forth between there and Tampa weekly.
