Window washers stuck in lift basket sent swinging by high winds

2 rescued from scaffold near top of 50-story Oklahoma tower

There was a terrifying situation in Oklahoma City on Wednesday as two window washers held on for dear life after their scaffold came loose on the side of Devon Tower.

Just before 9 a.m. CST, firefighters confirmed they had rescued the two window washers. Video footage shared on Twitter shows the lift being whipped back and forth uncontrollably, hitting the building and breaking windows, causing glass to fall onto Sheridan Avenue below.

Firefighters told the Oklahoman newspaper that the lift malfunctioned.

Macy said paramedics evaluated both men, who refused treatment.

According to Fulkerson, it is unclear how the lift became stuck, but an investigation is now underway.

The basket was high in the air, swinging, when firefighters rushed to the scene at Devon Tower around 8 a.m. local time.

The tower houses corporate offices for Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Corp.

Fire battalion chief Benny Fulkerson described the rescue effort as "tedious" but successful.

The company will also investigate the incident.
