Authorities say three sets of remains have been discovered at Virginia gas station where an explosion occurred.

State Police Sgt. Richard Garletts said three to five people remain unaccounted for, which includes family members of employees and a possible patron. According to the newly released statement from State Police, the remains have been taken to the Medical Examiner's Officer to be identified.

He later said one set of remains was found at the scene.

Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Salem Field Office is conducting an investigation into what caused the explosion, which official said does not appear suspicious at this stage of the investigation.

Geller said firefighters from the Rockbridge County Fire Rescue and Emergency Management department encountered heavy fire throughout the building. "Four adults have been transported to Carilion Stone Wall Jackson Hospital and are being treated for injuries". Their conditions could not be determined. A positive identification could take several days, police said.

The Rockbridge County School Board said a nearby elementary school was evacuated Friday, CBS affiliate WDBJ-TV reported.
