Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Manchester United's players they risk being omitted from the club's pre-season tour if they report back unfit.

Manchester United ended yet another Premier League season in disappointing fashion, losing 2-0 at home to already relegated Cardiff on Sunday.

"And we've spoken to them to say: 'We expect you to take charge next year.' We want them to, because we trust them".

Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard and Victor Lindelof were among the players who turned up at the training ground on Monday for treatment or to pick up their belongings before going away for the summer. If we can get the momentum early on, I'm sure we can catch a few teams. "They need players to come in, young, hungry players who want to play for that football club - unlike some of the signings that they have made".

The big news comes in attack, with Mason Greenwood making his full Premier League debut for Manchester United. The end of the season just makes it clearer.

"We've hit a brick wall towards the end of the season. It's not a shock".

Everton striker Cenk Tosun gave the Toffees the lead for the first time in the game in the second half before Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen scored the equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw for the Champions League finalists.

Mendez-Laing opened the scoring with a 23rd-minute penalty after he was fouled by Diogo Dalot as United, fielding six academy graduates, missed a string of chances in an action-packed first half before Josh Murphy almost grabbed a second for Cardiff.

"After the season he's had, just go in", said Shearer.

Including his stint as caretaker manager, Solskjaer has been at the helm of United for 28 games in all competitions, registering 16 victories eight losses and four in that time.

The 46-year-old also revealed how the power dynamic in the league has shifted since his days as a professional footballer.

"We have to close this gap as quick as we can. The top two teams have set a standard higher than before and we have to take up the next challenge".
