An officer with Texas' Baytown Police Department came under fire this week after cellphone video surfaced showing him discharging his department-issued firearm five times during a confrontation with woman believed to be pregnant.
The Baytown Police Department released its version of the events that led to the shooting death of a 45-year-old woman Monday night, explaining how the encounter that started over outstanding warrants ended in her death.
Dorris says the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The lieutenant said the officer, who is yet to be identified, was patrolling an apartment complex when he spotted the woman, who he'd dealt with before.
Video of the altercation shows that things quickly escalated between the officer and Turner as the law enforcement official attempted to place Turner in handcuffs. "I'm actually walking to my house!"
The woman's name has not been released, as her family has not yet been informed. While on her back, she appears to struggle with the officer, saying "Why?"
The video is dark, but it shows what appears to be her breaking free from the officer and moving toward the apartment buildings. According to The Associated Press, police said that they will determine whether she was pregnant during the autopsy.
"It's unfortunate that somebody takes a tragic incident like this and posts it on social media", he said.
The officer went after her and tased her.
The police are also trying to locate the person who filmed the shooting and uploaded the content to social media. He was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office is investigating, and the department will conduct an internal review. "It was a sad situation", Cuellar said. "It's extremely disrespectful for everybody involved, but that's the day and age we live in with social media".
