Apple said Mac Pro owners will be able to kit out their towers with wheels for easy mobility.
Apple has unveiled the new Pro Display XDF.
Those double-wide expansion slots won't go wanting for components to populate them, either.
Buyers can configure the MPX with AMD Radeon Pro Vega 2 or Radeon Pro Vega 2 Duo, the latter of which could mean four total GPUs and 128GB of video memory. These will be installed in two of Apple's MDX Modules and linked with its Infinity Fabric. Paired high-end GPUs also provide a combined 128 GB of HBM2 memory.
Seeing the new Mac Pro up close brought back fond memories of the old pre-2013 "trash can" Mac Pro. It also introduced Apple Afterburner, an accelerator card that Apple says enables playback of "three streams of 8K ProRes RAW video simultaneously". "With Retina 6K resolution, gorgeous color, extreme brightness and contrast ratio, and a highly functional design, Pro Display XDR delivers the most comprehensive set of features ever offered on any display at this price point". All of the CPUs that Apple will offer are Xeon W-family chips, but if you don't need that many cores you can opt for chips with 24, 16, 12, or 8 cores. And, while we can't play around and see how expensive it will get at the top end, we do know that it will come with up to a 28-core Intel Xeon processor, 1.5TB of RAM and a 4TB SSD, so it will definitely be more expensive to max out.
The Mac Pro 2019 also includes a 3.5mm audio jack and two 10Gbps Ethernet LAN ports. But it has an opening price of US$5999 - or about $8000 once you add GST and some currency hedging margin. There are holes covering the entire front and back of the Mac Pro's aluminum chassis and holes all along the backside of the Pro Display XDR. For example, the Mac Pro can supply an MPX module with as much as 500 watts.
What do you think of the new Mac Pro?
All of this huffing and puffing, according to Apple, is quiet enough to be nearly silent under normal workloads. A lattice pattern maximizes airflow and ensures quiet operation.
Internally, there will be eight PCI Express expansion slots so you can add extra functionality, answering the criticism of the very pretty but kinda frustrating Mac Pro this model supersedes. What kind of monitor will you hook up to it?
But why stop at just one of these displays?
"Pro Display XDR is the world's best pro display and the ideal companion to the all-new Mac Pro", said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
The 2013 "trashcan" Mac Pro was roundly criticized for a complete lack of upgradeability. So, it was a bit of a surprise when Apple released what can only be defined as an atrocious design decision with the new Mac Pro. The Pro Display XDR is going to be $4999, or $5999 for the nano-texture version. It's just too expensive for anyone who wasn't previously considering a super-expensive reference monitor.
