Former Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, 43, is believed to have suffered organ damage when he was sacked at in a Santo Domingo club about 8:50 p.m. local time.

Eddy Féliz García, 25, one of the suspects, was restrained by bystanders at the scene and beaten before being arrested.

Ortiz's wife Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement on Tuesday morning that he arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday night and underwent a successful second surgery.

Few have offered thoughts as heartfelt, however, as Pedro Martinez, the three-time Cy Young victor who spent seven years with the Red Sox and two alongside "Big Papi" in Boston. The Red Sox arranged to fly him to Boston following an initial surgery in the Dominican Republic to fix damage to his organs.

Ortiz was shot Sunday and is now recovering from exploratory surgery in Boston, where he was flown Monday night. The Red Sox retired his number the following year. They also had to remove Ortiz's gallbladder to work on the liver, though the gallbladder itself was not damaged.

As of the most recent reports, Ortiz, a beloved figure in the Dominican Republic, in Boston, and across baseball, is reportedly in stable condition. The accused's injuries have already been treated and he remains in police custody. Ortiz's father, Leo, told local media he had no idea why someone would have shot at his son.

Two other people were injured during the ambush, including television presenter Jhoel López; police said they were investigating whether Ortiz was the intended target.

She has also asked for privacy.
