Nadal 1 set from 12th French Open title

Rafael Nadal aims for a record-extending 12th French Open title against fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem in a rematch of last year's final. Nadal beat Thiem in straight sets in last year's final, but Thiem showed against Djokovic that he has the firepower and poise to deal with the top players.

It snapped Djokovic's 26-match winning streak in Grand Slams and ended the Serbian's hopes of holding all four of the sport's major prizes simultaneously for the second time, having achieved it by winning his only French Open in 2016.

Rafael Nadal kept his iron grip on the Coupe des Mousquetaires by beating Dominic Thiem in four sets to win a 12th French Open title.

3 - The 11 titles Nadal has at Roland Garros is already three more than any male player holds at a single grand slam tournament.

Thiem made it seem as if this one could be much more hard for Nadal, taking the second set to make it one set apiece.

The 25-year-old Thiem, however, was back in action less than 24 hours after defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinal on Saturday.

Djokovic, who had trailed 6-2 3-6 3-1 overnight after the semi-final had been curtailed yesterday because of rain and wind, had won his previous 10 Grand Slam semi-finals. He won 16 of the initial 17 points in the third set en route to collecting 12 of the last 14 games.

Thiem won the second set 7-5 after Nadal won the first 6-3.

By contrast Thiem, who he whitewashed in the final a year ago dropping just nine games, was coming off the back of a marathon match against Novak Djokovic.

"I think I surprised myself maybe how deep I got in this tournament and how well I actually was able to play throughout", he said.

Thiem regained his composure to stay toe to toe with Nadal in the second set, with no break-point opportunity available until it was Thiem who brought up two sets points on his opponent's serve.

Nadal should be more rested for Sunday's match, because Thiem needed two days to complete his five-set, four-hour semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic.

Dominic Thiem vs Rafael Nadal will take place at Philippe-Chatrier and is expected to start at 9:00 PM SGT.

Thiem broke to move into a 4-1 lead and then had a point to lead 5-1, which Djokovic saved with a forehand.

Thiem seeks his first major trophy.
