Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) pressed her case Tuesday that the Trump administration is running "concentration camps" at the U.S. -Mexico border amid criticism from Republicans who said she was demeaning Jews exterminated in the Holocaust.
Controversial Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended her vicious comments made on social media Monday night; blaming "shrieking Republicans" for the political fallout after she compared immigration detention centers with Nazi Concentration Camp. "And if that doesn't bother you".
"I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that we should not... that "Never Again" means something", the 29-year-old NY representative said.
Ocasio-Cortez said Amazon and Bezos should pay more in taxes, give up all government subsidies, send people to college tuition-free, and guarantee health care to all workers. I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is. "People are dying because of what is happening", it said, with at least six migrant children having died since late previous year after being apprehended by Border Patrol agents.
Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her false statement, tweeting: "This administration has established concentration camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrants, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying". These stays can be lengthy given the ongoing border crisis, on average 34 days, but that's only somewhat worse than the 25-day average length of stay in American jails before trial.
"Probably", she answered. "I actually don't think this is as partisan - I wouldn't look at this through a partisan lens".
The US is facing a surge in migrant arrivals from impoverished Central American countries which are plagued by gang violence, and the numbers have overwhelmed the ability of US authorities to temporarily shelter and process them.
"When it comes to President Clinton, I think that it's not just Democrats. A presidency that creates concentration camps is fascist, and it's very hard to say that". The tweet included a video of Ocasio-Cortez's remarks attacking Amazon, which she delivered during a Sunday appearance on ABC's "This Week".
The New York Congresswoman, a self-described democratic socialist, suggested what she believes could be a better way forward, where the US could have a free market economy "with democratic socialist businesses".
Ocasio-Cortez responded in a tweet, writing in part, "What do YOU call building mass camps of people being detained without a trial?"
