Rafael Nadal vs. Dominic Thiem

Gone With The Wind As Novak Djokovic Dominic Thiem Blown Off Course At Roland Garros

Roland Garros suffered another scheduling blow on Friday

Thiem, who has never made it to the final at another Grand Slam, is looking to become the first Austrian to win a major since Thomas Muster lifted the Musketeers Cup at the French Open in 1995.

Djokovic was still miffed that his semi-final with Thiem even started on Friday in the gale-force winds on Philippe Chatrier Court when he reflected in his press conference after losing in five sets.

A rattled Djokovic argued with the umpire, Jaume Campistol, for giving him a warning for taking too much time on serve in the last game of the third set.

"He showed why he's one of the best players in the world", Djokovic said.

On the final day of Roland Garros 2019, 11-time Champions Rafael Nadal will compete against Dominic Thiem for the title.

Djokovic, who had trailed 6-2 3-6 3-1 overnight after the semi-final had been curtailed yesterday because of rain and wind, had won his previous 10 Grand Slam semi-finals. Against Robin Soderling in the 2009 fourth round, and a quarter-final loss to Novak Djokovic four years ago.

Thiem, meanwhile, will be the one facing Rafael Nadal in the final for a second straight season.

Djokovic got straight into his groove, broke back in the third game of the day and was denied another break at 4-4 when Thiem failed to put away two smashes then got an outrageous net cord off an audacious half-volley.

The most glaring examples of this came at the end of the third set, when it appeared Djokovic might really be letting the whole match get away.

"They were some of the worst [weather] conditions I've experienced". Djokovic has been known, like Nadal, to take his time between points on serve.

After two previous stoppages, officials chose to push the match back because "playing conditions were becoming increasingly hard", with wind gusts of up to 55 miles per hour.

"I don't even know who I need to go search for to go practice with somebody who plays like him".

"But still, I had some very good matches in the past against him on clay, and I also beat him on clay already".

"If someone reaches the final here it is always against Rafa", Thiem said about the 11-time champion.

Djokovic asked Campistol, "Have you ever played tennis?"

Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo blasted tournament organisers for their decision to suspend play with daylight still remaining on Friday, claiming "we have hit rock bottom". Thiem is 4-8 overall in his career vs. Nadal and has beaten Nadal on European clay in each of the past three years. A first serve into the body plus an ace fended off two more set points prior to Thiem anticipating Djokovic serving and volleying and crushing a backhand. Dumped a backhand into the net. Sent a forehand long.
