A dominating 13-0 win over anyone is great, especially for an opening match and especially when mostly everything was clicking.

They have featured in all eight World Cups, while Thailand have qualified for the finals for only the second time, having been eliminated in the group stage in 2015.

Federation Internationale de Football Association says 14 of 52 Women's World Cup games have sold out, a month after boasting only a "few matches" still had tickets available. Alex Morgan had five goals, Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis scored two each, while Lindsey Horan, Carli Lloyd, Mallory Pugh and Megan Rapinoe added goals as well.

Morgan opened the goal spree for the title favourites, who are in pursuit of a fourth world crown, with a header in the 12th minute and from then on there was no stopping the champions.

"Every goal matters in this tournament and so that's what we were working on in this game". As in 9-0 in favor of the United States. The defending champs were expected to win easily over Thailand in their tournament opener, but most people didn't think the scoreboard would look quite this lopsided. In those three defeats, they have failed to score a single goal while conceding 21.

The reigning champions had to wait five days to start their campaign but produced an ominous performance that doubled as the biggest win in tournament history, surpassing Germany's 11-0 trouncing of Argentina in 2007.

Kickoff: The national anthems have played, and United States of America versus Thailand now is underway. Only Mia Hamm (276), Christie Rampone (311) and Kristine Lilly (354) have earned more. Chile is also arguably an inferior team to Thailand, so look out.

The top two teams in each of the six groups will qualify automatically for the last 16, along with the four best third-placed sides.
