Afcon 2019: We are ready to challenge Nigeria - Algeria's Mehdi Abeid

Senegal Algeria Nigeria or Tunisia? Rohr Picks Africa’s Best Team

AFCON 2019: Algeria win tense shoot out over Cote D'Ivoire to qualify for semi-finals

Senegal, who beat Tunisia 1-0 in extra time thanks to an own goal, await in Friday's final.

Algeria boss Djamel Belmadi said his players are "two very hard steps" away from writing history as they prepare to face Nigeria in Sunday's Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

It is always interesting to see how the psychological game plays out in the lead-up to a big match with everything at stake, such as an Africa Cup of Nations semi-final. "We are well prepared mentally", said Rohr.

The three most successful teams in Africa Cup of Nations history - Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana - were knocked out in the last 16, leaving Nigeria as the side with the best record.

The top two ranked countries in Africa, with Senegal first, are back in the semi-finals after lengthy absences. Senegal are making a first semi-final appearance since 2006, while tonight's opponents Tunisia have not advanced this far since winning the competition on home soil 15 years ago. Nicolas Pepe, who scored 22 league goals for Lille last season, has yet to fire, although with his Ivory Coast side meeting Algeria in the quarter-finals on Thursday that could change.

Straight after, Ivory Coast captain Serey Die had to score to send the shootout to sudden death, and he cannoned his penalty off the same post to finally seal the victory for the Algerians.

Nigeria also have the psychological advantage having beaten the North Africans in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, although the return leg ended one-all with Nigeria already qualified, Algeria were awarded a three-nil win due to Nigeria fielding a suspended player.

Algeria's national team coach, Djamel Belmadi, has lambasted Nigerian journalist, Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke, for trying to compel him to speak on a matter that concerns referee. Both teams have been humbled, the stellar names left to take their summer break earlier than anticipated. They played at the World Cup in 1982 and 1986 and some great games, but even those players didn't win it in 1990.
