Barcelona's mammoth release clause of €800m for Antoine Griezmann even eclipses Lionel Messi's buyout clause.

With Victor Lindelof now linked with a move to Barcelona, ESPN FC's Sid Lowe wonders if the Catalan giants are waving the white flag on their pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt.

He said in a video on Barcelona's Twitter: "When I was a boy, my dad taught me that trains don't come around just once".

After months of speculation and confirmation from Griezmann that he had made a decision to leave Atletico earlier this summer, his move to Barcelona was confirmed on Friday, but a legal wrangle may now begin between the two clubs.

Despite struggling for club form, Barcelona will be encouraged by the Brazilian's performances for his country this summer, where he played a crucial role winning the nation's first Copa America title in 12 years.

FC Barcelona stated on Friday that the French football star Antoine Griezmann has signed a 120 million euro contract to join the team for five years after the club paid a buyout fee to Atletico Madrid.

Griezmann announced in May he would not return to Atletico amid renewed speculation Barcelona was his destination.

He was scouted by Basque club Real Sociedad at the age of 14.

"Atletico believes that the amount deposited is insufficient since it is obvious that the commitment of the player and Barcelona was closed before the aforementioned clause was reduced from 200 to 120 million euros".

The 2018 FIFA World Cup victor, Griezmann, 28, scored 185 goals in 459 club appearances. The Frenchman then completed his U-turn in May by confirming that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. He won the Europa League in 2018 and finished in the top three of the La Liga table in every campaign with the club.
