Car Thief Beaten to Death by Angry Mob in Philadelphia

Authorities say a man who stole a auto with three young children inside was fatally beaten by their father and other men. She had their 3 children in the vehicle with her and she left them there while she dashed in.

The mother's boyfriend is the father of two of the children.

Erik Hood, 54, drove off with the vehicle while the children's mother and father were in a store Thursday night, police said.

The carjacker then fled on foot, but the father caught up with him and a physical confrontation ensued. The police have been examining video footage to identify those involved in the assault of Hood. The parents chased down the vehicle on foot and pulled the carjacker out of the auto when he got caught in traffic, police said.

He told WPVI: 'They [parents] were able to pull this auto thief out of the vehicle.

"Police said other bystanders in the area joined in and attacked the vehicle thief as well", NBC10 says. The auto thief only drove half a block before he became stuck in traffic.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told local NBC affiliate WCAU that the woman and her boyfriend were taken into custody, where they cooperated fully with law enforcement officers.

The man was taken to hospital with severe head and facial injuries.

The other men who jumped in the fight were not located.

A large crowd who was present at the scene stopped the carjacker and beat him.

Police are investigating and had not made any arrests Friday afternoon.
