Video and photos posted on social media showed a destroyed business with damaged buildings next to it.

The Plantation Fire Department could not immediately be reached for comment.

"All stores and businesses in the area of the Fountains Plaza and the Plantation Marketplace plaza near LA Fitness will be shut down until Fire Personnel can determine that it is safe to return".

"There is a closed pizza place place right on the corner but we haven't confirmed it originated there", he said.

Roy Ramos, who identified himself as a reporter from local news channel Local 10, wrote on Twitter that the building where the explosion occurred had been "destroyed", and that people nearby had felt their buildings shake.

"The whole building blew up", a man is heard saying in one video.

Police have asked people to avoid the area while they investigate. The fire department called it a gas explosion with "multiple patients". Fire and PD are working an incident involving an explosion.

The Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported that witnesses said a vacant restaurant appeared to be the source of the explosion.

He said: 'A huge, huge bang, thump, almost, explosion. Multiple injuries being reported.

One person wrote: "My jaw is dropped". "I live a mile away & my fan shook so hard I thought it was going to fall".

Lynn Kline, owner of a salon near the explosion, said she grabbed her customers and ran out the back door, some with half-haircuts and foil still in their hair.

Debris is strewn all over a vehicle park in another shocking clip.

Authorities are continuing their operation.
