UK Says Seized Iranian Oil Tanker Could Be Released

Hunt to dial down tensions in Gulf after seizure of Iranian tanker

UK, France, Germany urge U.S. and Iran to restore dialogue to stop escalation over nuclear deal

"Apparently, there are some in Europe who won't wake up until Iranian nuclear missiles land on European soil".

Pompeo appeared to be referring to comments by Iran's foreign minister on Monday in which he said Shi'ite Iran would discuss its missile program only after the United States ceased arming its regional Sunni rivals Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Following the U.S. withdrawal, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the deal. Right now, Europe is obligated towards us on this matter and has to solve this problem.

European foreign ministers will seek to flesh out how to convince Iran and the United States to reduce tensions and initiate a dialogue when they meet in Brussels on Monday amid fears that the 2015 nuclear deal is close to collapse.

But in order for talks to proceed, Iran has been crystal-clear: the USA must first lift the sanctions that were imposed on the country following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA.

Iran's top leader says his country will retaliate over the seizure of an Iranian tanker by British authorities.

Adelkhah's arrest comes as France and its European Union allies are seeking to keep alive the 2015 nuclear deal on Iran's nuclear programme after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the accord unilaterally.

China, one of the parties in the deal, also said US pressure was the root cause of recent developments and called on the Trump administration to fix the trouble it helped to create.

Rouhani's foreign minister-Javad Zarif-arrived at the United Nations in NY to urge once more the implementation of the JCPOA.

With the reimposition of U.S. sanctions, Iran has slowly reduced its nuclear commitments under the JCPOA, most notably announcing that they will increase beyond the 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of low-enriched uranium stockpile and beyond 3.67% enrichment.

Some might hope that a deal with Trump would mean a deal with the United States itself, as Trump owns the Republican Party and can bring it along to reconcile with Iran in the same way that Nixon reconciled with China.

UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters that the UN Secretariat was in contact with the United States and Iranian missions about Zarif's travel restrictions and "has conveyed its concerns to the host country".

The US said it suspects Iran has seized an oil tanker that drifted into Iranian waters as it traveled through the Strait of Hormuz.

"Iran is still a good year away from developing a nuclear weapon", he said.

He underscored that Trump keeps talking about Tehran's alleged nuclear aspirations, but observed that Iran abandoned its nuclear weapons program long ago. European oil firms (France's Total, Greece's Hellenic Petroleum, the Netherlands' Royal Dutch Shell, Italy's Eni and Saras, as well as Spain's Repsol) rushed to re-enter the Iranian oil and natural gas market.

Iran's rial currency appears to have stabilised despite the brewing confrontation with the United States, gaining about 13% since early May after a 60% plunge previous year.

"Iran doesn't recognize dual nationality, so for them she is Iranian, which is why consular access has not been permitted", he added.
