The Houston Astros will recognize the 50th anniversary of the first humans to land on the moon on Monday night when they wear special caps featuring the insignia of that historic Apollo 11 space mission during their game against the Oakland Athletics. The tapes, 2 hours and 24 minutes long, includes Neil Armstrong's famous declaration: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". That's because Scott was a competitive swimmer in high school and college, swimming at the University of MI on a scholarship. There were also intriguing references to the failed Soviet Luna-15 mission, launched by the Russians to try and steal Apollo 11's thunder but which failed miserably.

Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, as well as Rick Armstrong, son of Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong, were among those who joined the vice president onstage.

Mr Aldrin followed a few moments later, as their colleague Michael Collins waiting in the Command Module in orbit around the moon.

US President Donald Trump on Friday indicated he was not interested in a mission going back to the moon, despite his administration's plans for it. Trump instead repeated his interest in a NASA mission that would take astronauts directly to Mars, a vastly more challenging and costly endeavor.

In New York City, organizers moved a moon-landing party from Times Square into a hotel because of the heat wave.

Turner recalled watching the lunar landing with his family in Tennessee, then going outside to gaze at the moon. "It was just the novelty of it all".

Starting at 10:38 p.m. The powdered orange drink Tang was back in vogue for the toasts, along with MoonPies, including a 55-pound (25-kilogram), 45,000-calorie MoonPie at Kennedy's One Giant Leap bash.

It is within this charged context, with President Donald Trump publicly questioning NASA's plans to return to the Moon to test technology for Mars, that the USA is celebrating the anniversary of the epoch-making Apollo 11 mission. Only one of the three - cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov - was alive at the time of Apollo 11.

Pence, who chairs the newly-revived National Space Council, also revealed during his remarks that NASA's Orion crew capsule - the next-generation vessel created to transport humans not only to the moon, but eventually to Mars - "is complete and ready to begin preparations for its historic first mission", according to Fox News.

The crew deliberately modeled its mission patch after Apollo 11's: no astronaut names included to show the universal nature of space flight.
