Tottenham would tie the game, but De Bruyne would contribute again with another helper on a goal scored by Sergio Aguero in the 35th.

Jesus' goal was disallowed because of the newly introduced handball rules that state that any goal resulting from handball, accidental or otherwise, must be ruled out. Guardiola said the incident was a misunderstanding. A handball is now a handball pretty much every time. The scenes at the end were reminiscent of the Champions League clash between the sides at the same venue last season, when Spurs also came out on top.

Spurs had seen little of the ball up until this point but they caught City by surprise by hitting back with an immediate equaliser.

"If we continue to play in that way we won't have regrets and that is the most important thing".

While the Video Assistant Referee grabbed the headlines, Aguero and Guardiola got into an argument after the striker was taken off for Gabriel Jesus.

City were pushed all the way last season by a Liverpool side who recorded the third highest points tally in English football history with 97 and yet still could not topple Guardiola's men for the title.

The fact this was only spotted by VAR sometime after the offence - referee Michael Oliver had missed it - exacerbated the sense of frustration. But the goal was the subject of a lengthy review, which was conducted despite no complaints from any visiting players, and was eventually ruled out for a handball by Aymeric Laporte.

"I wasn't in agreement [with the early close of the Premier League transfer window] but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs", Pochettino said.

"That should never on any playing field or in any country anywhere be disallowed".

We played really well, we controlled left and right and created chances against a good side but we need to be more clinical.

"It wouldn't even be seen if we didn't have VAR".

It is part of the game now. The Brazilian looked to have justified Guardiola's decision to bring him on in place of Aguero when he found the back of Hugo Lloris' net at the death to earn what he thought was a richly deserved victory for the champions.
