Verizon Sells Tumblr, Still No Porn Though

Verizon to sell Tumblr to Word Press owner

Verizon Sells Tumblr to WordPress Owner

Tumblr's popularity has been dwindling over the years, and a decision by the firm last year to ban all adult content as it scrambled to crack down on child pornography came as a particularly hard blow. Verizon acquired Tumbler when it purchased Yahoo in 2017.

The porn-ban went into effect on December 17th, when the site began using algorithms to flag and delete any such content.

Tumblr is now owned by Automattic Inc., the company that owns Wordpress.com, as well as Longreads, Akismet and Gravatar.

"Tumblr is a marquee brand that has started movements, allowed for true identities to blossom and become home to many creative communities and fandoms", Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan said in a statement to The Verge.

In a statement, Verizon described Automattic as "the flawless partner" and said that the new deal was "the culmination of a thoughtful, thorough and strategic process". He says he sees the site as complementary to Wordpress, and as a longtime Tumblr user he says it's "just fun" and he is "not going to change" any of Tumblr's functionality or character. Tumblr is one of the most popular blogging social networks around.

A price has not been reported, however, Axios reports that the sale was for "well below" $20 million, even suggesting the price could be below $10 million.

The front-end user experience on Tumblr will evolve on its own path but could adopt some standardized technology from Open Source WordPress, the Journal reported.

For Automattic, it's the company's largest acquisition to date and includes Tumblr's 200 employees. Yahoo had bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013, but ended up writing off much of its value. The buyer, Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, confirmed plans to acquire Tumblr earlier today. According to the report, Pornhub was the only site which had shown interest in buying Tumblr till then.
