American beauty brand Victoria Secret has reportedly hired a transgender model, Valentina Sampaio for their fashion show, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Like how many Victoria's Secret models get their start, Valentina will appear in the VS PINK back-to-campus campaign this August.
Victoria's Secret model Lais Ribeiro, a fellow Brazilian, tweeted: "First transgender to shoot with Vs!" He apologized after outrage ensued. When he was asked about including transgender models he said, "I don't think we should...the show is a fantasy". He also said that this "Is a specialty business; it isn't a department store", and about how they don't think they can be all these things to their customers. "It's a 42-minute entertainment special", Razek said in an interview with Vogue.
It looks like the brand's putting their plan into action though, by giving their first-ever transgender model her wings.
Razek later apologised for his statements which he thought came across as insensitive and made a clarification statement saying that he would cast a transgender model for their show. We market to who we sell to, and we don't market to the whole world.
Sampaio's agent, Erio Zanon, told ET that his client was "very happy for it and hopes that it shall continue to break barriers and to make a step to more inclusivity and representation for everybody".
While the lingerie giant is yet to comment on the news, a number of Victoria's Secret Angels, as well as other celebrities, have taken to the comments section of the post in order to congratulate the model.
The recent news of Sampaio's gig, has seen Victoria's Secret make headlines for all the right reasons. The company's revenue has been on the decline recently and they are working to rebrand the company.
