"The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, want to stay as far away as possible from the Joe Biden demand that the Ukrainian Government fire a prosecutor who was investigating his son, or they won't get a very large amount of US money, so they fabricate a story about me and a perfectly fine and routine conversation I had with the new President of the Ukraine", Mr. Trump said in a tweet.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump pressed Zelensky about eight times on the call to investigate possible corruption involving Biden's son Hunter, who worked with a Ukrainian natural gas company.
"Trump is doing this because he knows I'll beat him like a drum and he is using the abuse of power and every element of the presidency to try to do something to smear me", he said, growing increasingly irritated.
Biden responded forcefully, demanding Trump immediately release the transcript of the call and saying the reports Trump sought to coerce his Ukrainian counterpart, if true, amounted to "clear-cut corruption". Mr. Trump didn't mention a provision of foreign aid to Ukraine on the call, said this person, who didn't believe Mr. Trump offered the Ukrainian president any quid-pro-quo for his cooperation on an investigation. The complaint was based on a series of events, one of which was a July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, according to two people familiar with the matter.
In the whistleblower case, lawmakers are looking into whether Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani travelled to Ukraine to pressure the government to aid Trump's re-election effort by investigating the activities of Biden's son.
Democratic lawmakers say a president conditioning foreign aid on providing dirt on a USA election rival would amount to grounds for impeachment. Biden is now leading polls for the Democratic presidential nomination.
And Trump talked about it with the Ukrainian president in a July phone call that's now the subject of intense scrutiny.
The U.S. government's intelligence inspector general has described the whistleblower's August 12 complaint as "serious" and "urgent".
"No, I didn't ask him to look into Joe Biden, I asked them to look into the allegations that were related to my client which were tangentially involved Joe Biden in a massive bribery scam", Giuliani said. "The Fake News knows this but doesn't want to report!" he said. The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has said he will go to court in an effort to get it if necessary.
"So you did ask Ukraine to look into Joe Biden?". He initially said, "No, actually I didn't", but seconds later he said, "Of course I did".
Giuliani has been working for months to get Ukraine's leadership to probe the Bidens.
Adding yet another layer to the controversy, congressional policymakers were concerned the Trump administration had been holding back military aid to Ukraine at the time.
For his part, Biden released a statement on Friday calling out Trump's "abhorrent" behavior. A short time later, Giuliani met with Yermak in Spain to press again for the investigations and to discuss the status of a prospective Trump-Zelenskiy meeting, which Ukraine sought as a show of support against Russian Federation.
This year, Trump's personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani revived interest in the issue and said he reached out directly to the Ukrainian government. In March, Cuomo and Don Lemon, another CNN host, debated whether White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway should be permitted to appear as a guest.
As the contours of the episode roiling the capital begin to flesh out, here are some questions and answers at the intersection of Trump, Ukraine and the whistleblower. There are also differences, as well as much that remains unknown. Maguire and the inspector general, Michael Atkinson, also are expected next week at the Senate Intelligence Committee.
