"We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term "spinoffs") at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely", he wrote at the time.
Another Game of Thrones prequel is gearing up at HBO! But it sure seems logical.
The Targaryens' history was briefly touched on in the original series and produced some of the show's juiciest storylines, including Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) true identity, so an entire series dedicated to their tawdry family drama feels like an easy win.
First reported by Deadline and confirmed separately by Variety, the spin-off would be centred on the Fire & Blood book that focuses on the lineage of Targaryen kings of old, including Aegon the Dragonbane and Aegon the Conqueror.
Although the announcement is still essentially just a rumour - HBO have declined to comment - early rumblings suggest that Martin himself will have a bigger hand in production. Jane Goldman will serve as showrunner and co-created the series with Martin, and S.J. Clarkson will direct the pilot and executive produce.
"Two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. I can not say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories". That brings us to the famed civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons - mentioned on the show and in A Song of Ice and Fire book with a similar title - before ending with the first few years of the reign of Aegon III.
The series will premiere next year and star Naomi Watts, who spoke with ET about the project in November, admitting that she became a GoT super-fan overnight.
The rest of the cast for that other series includes Josh Whitehouse, Miranda Richardson, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
