Keith Duncan kicked four field goals for the Hawkeyes (3-0), who improved to 4-0 against Iowa State coach Matt Campbell in a game twice delayed almost 3 hours because of lightning. Still, Iowa is allowing just 10.3 points a game, which is tied for 10th nationally with Ohio State.
But maybe this is a different Iowa team, too.
At least some Iowa State students had fun during the game. The Cyclones then moved ahead 14-6 just 57 seconds into the second half on a 73-yard strike from Purdy to Tarique Milton, who breezed past Iowa's banged-up secondary.
"It's hard to script and prepare for (the weather)", Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.
Wide receiver Deshaunte Jones took the ball on a backward pass and caught Iowa's defensive attention.
Six hours after the game started, the Hawkeyes kept their composure in two crucial sequences.
"I know that's been a hot ticket item, everybody's been asking that question for the last month", Campbell said. Quarterback Nathan Stanley finished the game 16-of-28 for 236 yards and three touchdowns. I think this Iowa team has the potential to really do something in the national picture. He's 0-3 against the Hawkeyes, though the last two losses have come by a combined 13 points. "The most important game of the season is to beat the home state team".
Because of the two delays, the game spanned almost six hours even after the teams agreed to a shortened halftime.
