The primary school in the Hubei province had started for the first day after the summer holidays.

Police have reportedly arrested a 40-year-old suspect named Yu whom they discovered on the scene.

The attack took place at the Chaoyangpo Elementary School in Hubei's Enshi City. Two other children were injured as well. How the children were attacked was not disclosed.

The suspect had been freed from jail and launched the stabbing spree to take revenge on society, an insider revealed. The authorities have not yet revealed the names or ages of the victims who lost their lives. The motive for the attack is unclear.

Students at an elementary school in Beijing were also attacked earlier this year.

The local government is making "every effort" to organise the rehabilitation and treatment for the wounded, including psychological counselling, the statement said.

The Enshi City government, which announced the deaths, said in a statement: "The local party committee and government is all out organising rescue and remedial work". It is alarming to see a rise in attacks on children.

In October, a woman slashed children on the playground of a kindergarten with a cleaver, leaving 14 pupils injured.

In April 2018, a man killed nine middle school students as they were returning home in one of the country's deadliest knife attacks in recent years.
