AMD's entry-level Radeon RX 5500 is headed to desktops... and laptops

More Navi Coming: AMD Unveils Radeon RX 5500, RX 5500M GPUs for Q4 2019

AMD Radeon RX 5500 takes on the GTX 1650 for entry-level gaming

The Radeon RX 5500M represents the very first (possibly of many) laptop-based mobile chips in the RDNA family.

"Based on feedback and insights from global gaming communities, gamers rank graphics as the most critical component for speed and performance", said Johnson Jia, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Business of Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo.

Some displays may intermittently flash black when Radeon FreeSync is enabled and the system is at idle or on desktop. Both are built around a smaller Navi 14 GPU and take aim at 1080p gaming. AMD also claims the RX 5500 should average up to 37% performance than competitors at Full HD.

Additionally, AMD says that these cards can achieve 60+ FPS in some recent triple-A games (listing Monster Hunter: World and Borderlands 3 as some of the games that were testing) and up to 90 FPS in some eSports titles like Apex Legends. Price-wise, MSI will be releasing it into the market for a cool RM 4,799.

Anyone who buys an Alpha 15 before the end of 2019 will also be able to get Borderlands 3 or Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint for free "while supplies last". So, you'll be able to use AMD latest features including Radeon Image Sharpening for increased detail, FidelityFX's post-processing effects, and Anti-Lag to reduce input-to-display response time on your gaming monitor.

AMD FidelityFX, offering an open-source toolkit for game developers to add high-quality post-process effects to help make games look attractive while offering the optimal balance of visual fidelity and performance.

That's a real shame because on paper the Radeon RX 5500 sounds a pretty good card. MSI will offer both 120Hz and 144Hz displays, and both include AMD Radeon FreeSync technology.

The MSI Alpha 15 is expected to go on sale later in October at $999 with 8GB of RAM or $1,099 with 16GB of RAM.

The RX 5500 graphics cards are also expected to be available in the upcoming Acer Nitro 50 PCs beginning in December 2019.
