Extinction Rebellion said several protesters were arrested in the Victorian capital. Protesters lay around the bull with red paint on their bodies while one member waved a green flag from atop the statue.

Around a thousand protesters from action group Extinction Rebellion gathered on Stadhouderskade, at the Rijksmuseum, from around 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning to demonstrate for a more effective climate policy.

In Brisbane, protesters chained themselves to intersections in the city center and three people locked themselves onto barrels filled with concrete.

The Paris event brought the area around Chatelet to a standstill.

"Some might call us protesters, I call us protectors", said spokesperson Simon Oosterman.

Young activist Tash, from Liverpool, said: "The police tactics seem to be against our rights to non-violent protest".

Similar climate protests are happening in Berlin, Madrid, London and other European cities.

About 30 Extinction Rebellion protestors were arrested late this afternoon after a day of civil disobedience in central Wellington.

"All these movements that we have seen in recent times are global ones and with good reason - we'll only see the moves we need on climate change if we are taking global action", said Ardern.

Among those arrested was 81-year-old Sarah Lasenby, a retired social worker from Oxford.

On its website, the group states: "Take two weeks off work, bring your family and friends and join us in the streets for a one time only 'chance of life.' We can not do this alone, everybody counts and we need everyone to join us, now".

The Norwich Extinction Rebellion group has occupied a site in Horse Guards Parade, along with hundreds of activists from other local groups from the East of England and the Midlands.

He said police were prepared to act if the situation escalated.

The group wants Carbon dioxide emissions in the Netherlands to be reduced to zero within five years, instead of the government's goal of a 49 percent reduction compared to 1990 by 2030 and a 100 percent reduction within 30 years.

Similar protests in the United Kingdom earlier this year brought major disruption to London and resulted in more than 1100 arrests.

Back in April, members of the group blocked several London roads and bridges during 10 days of action created to alert the public and politicians to the "climate emergency".

It's all to protest climate change.

More than 1,000 protesters were arrested in April following an 11-day demonstration in London.

The demonstration went ahead despite the city banning activists from gathering on the road.

Extinction Rebellion called for more provisions amid an uptick of arrests and confiscations by the police, appealing to "more Londoners to join us as we head towards a chilly evening".

Some 60 events were planned around the world on Monday and in Germany they were keen to kick off proceedings early.

The movement, also known as XR, now has chapters in some 50 countries.
