The Cowboys are now 3-2 heading into a game next week against the New York Jets. He's accumulated a 77-59 regular-season record across nine campaigns and led Dallas to its second NFC East crown in three years last season before being ousted by the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round.

The quarterback, who had been sidelined for about a month with mononucleosis, was cleared by doctors Tuesday to return to gameplay. Before his illness surfaced he was the starting quarterback in the Jets'opener which ended up as a 17-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills. So Luke Falk - on one day of full reps with the first-team offense - started his second straight game for NY.

The Jets, off to their worst start since 2003, hope Darnold can galvanize a punchless and mistake-prone offense. Late Thursday, he was ruled out after an ultrasound and blood test.

"I'm excited to hear the news, " Darnold said Monday during his weekly appearance on "The Michael Kay Show" on 98.7 ESPN Radio. "Hopefully, this week it's better news and I get to practice and get ready for a game on Sunday". The Jets still have many issues but getting Darnold back is a huge first step in the right direction.
